Four tribes, one instinct: to run

An award-winning film made with AI — and still, entirely, mine.

[Campaign visual — to be supplied]

Context

Momentum is a self-initiated documentary, written and directed with generative AI as the production tool — not the author. The premise: four peoples, living worlds apart, moved by the same primal instinct — to run. From Mexico to South Africa, running as ritual, escape, prayer, survival. A proof that AI could serve a real authorial voice instead of replacing it.

The challenge

AI films have a smell: dazzling frames, hollow centre. The tech shows off and the story goes missing. The challenge wasn’t making AI produce footage — it was making it produce meaning: a throughline strong enough that four unrelated cultures felt like one idea, and a script that earned its place at festivals judged by humans, not benchmarks.

The thinking

The organising thought: running is the oldest human language — older than words, understood everywhere without translation. That reframed the whole film. AI wasn’t there to invent spectacle; it was there to let one writer stage four worlds that no single crew could reach. I wrote the spine first — the instinct that binds the tribes — and only then let the machine build the images to carry it. Authorship stayed upstream, where the thinking is. The film is, itself, an argument for the site’s whole thesis: the thinking still comes first.

The copy

Four tribes, living worlds apart, bound by the same instinct… to run.

Before language, there was this. / A body, a horizon, and the oldest verb we know. / They have never met. They are running the same run.

Craft notes

The line that carries the film — “bound by the same instinct… to run” — depends on English letting “run” sit alone as a bare, primal verb. French “courir” is just as primal but heavier in the mouth; the ellipsis does more work in French, giving “courir” the beat of breath before a sprint.

What AI could not author: the choice of running as the universal language. A model can generate a runner; it cannot decide that running means the same thing to a Rarámuri and a South African child. That decision is the film — and it’s human.

Craft principle on display: direct the machine like a DP, not a co-writer. It frames beautifully. It never knows why the shot matters.

Result

An AI film that convinced human juries — awarded and officially selected — precisely because the technology stayed in service of the idea. Proof, on the record, that “made with AI” and “authored” are not opposites. [Full festival list and any additional honours to be confirmed.]
